Building Creativity Brick by Brick: DAA's Lego Club
Over the summer I became obsessed with Legos! Building the many different sets helped me find peace and enjoyment, and increased my problem-sloving skills. When the time came to sign-up for after-school activities, I knew I had to create a Lego Club to help share my joy with the students. But I couldn’t just give the students boxes of bricks to play with, I had to help them understand what all Legos can provide. Over the course 9 weeks, students discovered a new medium to create ideas that might have been challenging to articulate otherwise.
Engaging in Lego Club not only fostered creativity but also honed problem-solving skills among the students. As they encountered challenges such as designing race cars that were put to the test, animals, and building they were prompted to think critically and devise solutions that arose from pieces falling or their ideas not being able to come fully to life. This process of trial and error encouraged perseverance and resilience, essential qualities that extend beyond the realm of building blocks and into their academic and personal lives.
